Philip Morris, Chevron, Blue Cross, toxic chemical companies are funding the attacks on Richard Holober, Democrat for AssemblyPRESS RELEASE
(Burlingame, CA) Health experts and environmental leaders today exposed Chevron, Phillip Morris, Blue Cross, and toxic chemical manufacturers as the source of money for a last minute smear campaign to defeat Democrat Richard Holober in the 19th Assembly District race. Voters have received two mailers in recent days attacking Holober, a consumer advocate and environmental champion endorsed by US Senator Barbara Boxer, the California Nurses Association, SEIU United Health Care Workers West, the Sierra Club, Vote the Coast and many others. Reports filed with the Secretary of State indicate that JobsPAC, a political front group for toxic polluters, tobacco, oil and other special interests has spent $73,000 in recent days to derail Democrat Holober. "Philip Morris tobacco gave $80,000 to JobsPAC, which is attacking Holober," stated Stanton Glantz, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Director, Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, University of California, San Francisco. "Philip Morris hides its political money to disguise its attacks on Holober, because it knows that to be publicly identified as opposing Holober will probably convince people to vote for him. Having Big Tobacco - the king of special interest lobbies - attack a public interest advocate for 'lobbying' is the height of hypocrisy." "Chevron Oil gave $150,000 to JobsPAC in the past year to fund the attacks on Holober," stated Bill Magavern, California Director of Sierra Club. "Richard will be tough on toxic polluters and good for the environment and that is something that would not please Chevron Oil." "Blue Cross gave $30,000 to JobsPAC to fund the attacks on Holober," stated Ramon Castellblanch, PhD, Associate Professor of Health Education, San Francisco State University. "California's largest for-profit health insurance company, wants to stop Richard Holober because he is a strong advocate for guaranteed health insurance for all, and for controlling Blue Cross' skyrocketing rate increases." "Chemtura Corporation and Albemarle Corporation contributed to JobsPAC to fund misleading attacks on Holober," stated Arlene Blum, PhD, Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley. "These companies manufacture fire retardant chemicals that have been found to harm brain and organ development and/or cause cancer in animals. As Executive Director of the Consumer Federation of California, Richard has been fighting to remove these dangerous chemicals from our homes. These chemical companies don't want his leadership to protect public health in California." Richard Holober added "Philip Morris, Chevron, Blue Cross and the toxics industry don't have the guts to reveal that they are funding this smear campaign. I'm honored that Barbara Boxer, teachers, nurses, firefighters and the Sierra Club support me. I'm equally honored that polluters, tobacco peddlers, insurance gougers and the toxics industry are afraid of me. It shows that I'm the Democrat who walks the walk when public health, environmental protection and consumer's pocketbooks are under attack."
