Mandelkern, Miljanich, Schwarz for College Bd.These days, leadership is about making the tough decisions to provide better services with less money. That’s why I support Dave Mandelkern, Patricia Miljanich and Karen Schwarz for re-election to the San Mateo County Community College Board. Here are a few of Dave, Pat and Karen's achievements: Standing Up for Working FamiliesSan Mateo County is a wonderful place to live. Nadia and I raised our two children here, where we are blessed to have small town neighborhoods in the middle of a world class urban setting.
Californians are enduring the worst economy in our lifetimes. Jobs are vanishing. School funding is being slashed. Yet corporate profits are soaring and the wealth gap between the top 1% and the rest of us is the biggest its been since 1929.
I am President of the San Mateo County Community College Board. We govern the College of San Mateo, Skyline College and Cañada College. We provide a lifeline for students needing college education or job training at an affordable price. We have navigated these tough times, balancing complex budgets while maintaining essential services with fewer funds. I have also served for decades as an advocate for consumers, workers and retirees, winning victories that protect our hard earned pay. In the May 2011 election for Board of Supervisors, with no backing from the County's political clubhouse, I finished 1.8% behind the winner who funded his campaign with $500,000 of his personal fortune. Election Results… I welcome your ideas on how we can rebuild the American Dream for Peninsula residents. About Richard… Gov. Brown Signs Consumer Protection BillsOn issues ranging from household toxics to food safety to elder abuse to personal privacy, Governor Jerry Brown has demonstrated much greater empathy with consumer protection than his predecessor. The 2011 end of session tally stands at 33 signatures and four vetoes on Consumer Federation of California supported bills that made it as far as the governor’s desk. In his final year in office, former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed with consumers on only ten of 27 bills that made it to his desk. Ban the Sale of Expired Baby Food and MedicineUpdate: Gov. Browns signs bill banning expired baby food, infant formula and medications. When Dale Proctor’s nine month old son Kai became violently ill this year after eating baby food purchased at a Raley’s Supermarket in Woodland, he and his wife Connie desperately searched for an explanation. “I went to the cupboard to check the baby food jars – to my surprise the jar of baby food was past the use by date – seven months past the date. I cannot explain how upset we were.” AB 52 Regulates Health Insurance Price HikesA bill to regulate health insurance rate hikes faces fierce industry opposition as it moves through the legislature. AB 52 (Feuer) would rein in health and HMO premium increases that soared 131% from 1999 to 2009 - nearly five times the rate of inflation. August 31 Update Assemblyman Feuer is holding the bill for now. A final Senate Floor vote is expected in January 2012. Please tell your State Senator to support insurance rate regulation. TAKE ACTION HERE We won a 2011 Sustainable San Mateo County AwardThe College of San Mateo received a 2011 Sustainable San Mateo County Award for our new Health and Wellness Center. This is in recognition of the facility's "LEED Gold" certification. LEED is the national standard of excellence for green building. My duties as President and elected Trustee of the San Mateo County Community College District begin with making sure that College of San Mateo, Cañada College and Skyline College rank among California's best in academics and career training - but they don't end there. CA Federation of Teachers Endorses Holober for SupervisorI am pleased to announce that the California Federation of Teachers has endorsed my candidacy for San Mateo County Supervisor. I am thrilled to have the support of classroom teachers and college faculty who work so hard to create a brighter future for our state. CFT President Marty Hittelman stated: "The California Federation of Teachers supports Richard Holober - the education candidate - for County Supervisor. Richard is a leader who provides outstanding education and job training programs at College of San Mateo, Cañada College and Skyline College to tens of thousands of Peninsula residents each year." California Nurses Endorse Holober for SupervisorThe California Nurses Association has endorsed my candidacy for San Mateo County Supervisor. Nursing is America's most trusted profession, according to the Gallup Poll - for good reason. We and our loved ones experience firsthand how hard these front line health care providers work to make sure that their patients receive quality care. |
